FAQs

WHAT IS A BERNEDOODLE?

A bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle. They come in different sizes, depending on their parents' sizes. There is the standard Bernedoodle, which is a cross between a standard poodle and a Bernese mountain dog. A mini bernedoodle is a cross between a miniature poodle and a Bernese mountain dog, and a tiny bernedoodle is a cross between a toy poodle and a mini bernedoodle. A bernedoodle's coat is considered hypoallergenic, which is an inherited trait from its poodle parent. This means that they either don't shed or they shed very little. This is great for those who suffer from allergies or who can be allergic to dog hair.
Bernedoodles are a mix of two breeds; they are not mutts. Mutts are dogs that are usually a mix of more than two breeds and these breeds tend to be unknown and indiscriminately chosen. Bernedoodles have purebred parents specifically chosen for this breed of dog. Bernese mountain dogs are considered a large dog breed. Thus, their average lifespan is only between six and eight years. However, bernedoodles' average lifespan is between 12 and 15 years, and even longer for minis or tiny bernedoodles. This is good news for pet owners who hate facing their pet's death. Poodles are known for their intelligence, and Bernese mountain dogs are working dogs. This makes them respond to training very well as they want to work and please you. They also make great therapy dogs, too. They are sweet, loyal, and lively. With attention, your bernedoodle will be the perfect companion for you.

WHAT SIZE IS A BERNEDOODLE?

Bernedoodles are generally medium- to large-sized dogs. Because Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs are both larger breeds that can weigh in ranges from 50 to 100 pounds, a bernedoodle is also a larger dog that can grow up to 30 inches tall at the shoulder.

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE COAT LIKE?

A bernedoodle coat will be thicker, and they can range between straight, wavy, or even curly coats, depending on how the genes of the dog present themselves. The coats will generally be a thicker consistency, and some bernedoodles may have an undercoat in wintertime similar to the Bernese Mountain Dog coat.

WHAT COLORS DO BERNEDOODLES COME IN?

Bernedoodles may come in a variety of colors, depending on how the genes of their parents present as the puppy grows. Options that are most common are tri-color, with the three main colors that are similar to Bernese Mountain Dogs, Diluted or Merle, which has lighter tones of the original colors, Sable, which have black-tipped fur patterns, Brindle, which has the tri coloration but in a mixed pattern, Phantom, which is generally one color with a lighter color on certain points of the body (like eyebrows or paws), and Black and White.

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE TEMPERAMENT LIKE?

Bernedoodles are designed to be affectionate, intelligent, and serene companion dogs, mixing the best of both worlds between the Bernese Mountain Dog, which is generally very laid back and sweet, and the Poodle, which is smart, motivated, and loyal.

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE LIFESPAN?

Bernedoodles are hardy dogs that are expected to live anywhere from ten to sixteen years of age, barring any major health complications or external factors.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH CONCERNS OF A BERNEDOODLES?

As with all purebred dogs, there are potential health concerns to be aware of, but because these dogs are a crossbreed, there are fewer concerns to keep an eye out for. Bernedoodles may be prone to joint dysplasia, including that of the hips and elbows in particular. In addition, eye problems may arise, and they are at risk for different types of cancer. As you would with any furry family member, be sure to bring your dog to the vet regularly for checkups, testing, and regular health maintenance.

HOW DO I KNOW A GOOD BREEDER VS A BAD ONE?

A good dog breeder engages in proper breeding practices. These include not breeding a dog too early, ensuring their dogs are tested, healthy, and up to standards for breeding. Plus, their puppies will have the proper paperwork, vaccinations and deworming protocol. Most professional breeders can use sophisticated veterinary tools before the pups are born, such as ultrasounds to ensure the mother's pregnancy is going smoothly. After birth, the puppies will receive proper care, including deworming and vaccinations to ensure they are perfect for their forever homes. Some breeds require more grooming than others. Here at JM Kennels, our chosen breeds of Bernedoodles, Bernese mountain dogs, and standard poodles most definitely have hair that needs attention! A sign of a professional dog breeder is how well their dogs' coats, paws, and overall appearance is cared for. Professional breeders ensure their dogs receive the best of care. Many have a preferred veterinarian that understands their dogs' breed and can offer exceptional and personalized care. Beyond vet care, professional breeders invest in the highest-quality food to ensure proper nutrition, and allow their dogs plenty of room and opportunity for exercise. Socialization is huge for pups. In fact, socialization is absolutely critical so that your puppy can be happy and understand the world it's been born into. Puppies are learning the most when they are young, so it's crucial to start socialization in order to teach pups proper social behavior as soon as possible. Professional breeders take this responsibility seriously, and expose your puppy to humans, sights, and sounds for their overall health and well-being.
